The Island Grill..a most enjoyable sustainable Eaterie near London's Hyde Park..

Modern European Cuisine

Island Grill's lively bar and restaurant is situated in the towering Lancaster London hotel opposite Hyde Park and is a ideal spot to enjoy modern European cuisine served with panache by a friendly staff who have been trained well in the art of taking care of their patrons as well as being knowledgeable about the dishes they are serving and wines they are pouring.
Awarded 2 AA Rosettes for their eco friendly conservancy the restaurant is committed to using local producewhen available and the chef early in the morning visits wholesale markets to buy fresh organic foods.

The menu is a mix of contemporary European cuisine and is well received by guests from the hotel and local residents of every nationality who live in the area. An open kitchen gives you the opportunity to watch chefs at work creating mouthwatering dishes for your enjoyment. The restaurant is split level with floor to ceiling windows looking out over Hyde Park and is only a minute's walk from Lancaster Gate Tube Station.

A great annual happening is the London Honey Show which is organized and hosted at the hotel. There are also beehives on the roof of the hotel attracting people from all around the world to enjoy their organic honey.

Food...glorious Food

The night I visited I chose Gressingham Duck with roasted red beetroot and parsnips although other great selections like Welsh Lamb char-grilled cutlets and slow cooked shoulder of lamb with wilted spinach and butternut squash puree would have made an ideal second choice. There are seafood specialities like Seafood Bucatini a mix of Tiger prawns, squid, mussels and prawns with Bucatini pasta in a delicate white wine and parsley sauce. Grilled meats like sirloin, ribeye or fillet are all dry aged British Beef and served with a side order of veggies. The fish are caught in Sussex and Kent by boat fishermen daily and the restaurant’s dedication to using sustainable products adds to the integrity of their cuisine. Starters like their own House smoked salmon on chargrilled sourdough bread with dill and horseradish cream also makes a great lunch choice as do the crab cakes and Ragstone goats cheese, chicory salad & red onion marmalade with a rosemary flat bread.

Desserts are hand crafted and their speciality Chocolate Plate comes with a dark chocolate fondant, white chocolate and coffee foam and chocolate sorbet. The Green apple and Calvados Charlotte served with homemade cinnamon ice cream is another luscious dish. The wine menu is wide and varied with offerings from the New and Old World and there is a fully stocked bar for those who enjoy cocktails.

The restaurant has its own entrance but it is part of the Lancaster London hotel so guests can take pleasure in Island Grill’s breakfast menu. Eggs Benedict, golden fried Brioche with fruit salad, hot Porridge with berry compote and honey which is produced by the hotel’s own colony of bees are just a few of the morning offerings.

Where and...

Island Grill has been awarded the Sustainable Restaurant Association’s top Three Star rating so you can be sure you will be partaking of not only first class cuisine but it will be healthy too. Head Chef Darren Marshall’s commitment to excellence is reflected in his choice of the finest ingredients and creative cosmopolitan dishes from land and sea.

When next in London town be sure to visit this affordable and quite delightful eaterie. You will be well pleased...

Where to eat in London can always be difficult especially if you have been brainwashed by media that British food is terrible. But that is a myth and if you read this you will understand more and perhaps gain a little wisdom which you might need....

Destroying Myths

London has become a mecca for great restaurants...contrary to the myth that has grown up probably due to ignorance and jealousy especially by the French and also by many Americans who mostly have no idea about food...after all they are the ones who created fast food, McDonalds home to chemicalized obese producing stuff and others I do not want to mention.

A few years ago I was invited to lunch with a group of writers in Los Angeles. It was given to honour the Minister of Culture from the UK. After the luncheon he asked each of us to speak a few words and when it came to my turn I told him that my mission was to dispel the myth that had grown up in the USA about British food and since that time I have been doing that.

And So It Goes

Nowadays many of the British chefs are invited all over the world to cook and I for one also find this disturbing as their egos become inflated and they start producing cuisine that is over the top! Unfortunately because of the demand by the public to have exotic dishes many chefs bring in foods that are not seasonal and this is also is to their detriment.
However, we still have hidden away restaurants in London and many towns across the UK where you can find great food being served. Using local products mostly organic and also only seasonal vegetables and fruits, they take pride in the quality of what they serve. I even spoke to one chef who threw away all the micro wave machines in her kitchen because she knew how poisonous micro waved food could be...radio waves with wavelengths ranging from as long as one meter to as short as one millimeter, or equivalently with frequencies that change the food and can harm.

Pleasures of Angelus

So let me tell you about Angelus a fabulous eating house near the Royal Park Hotel just off Westbourne Terrace.Once it was an old pub frequented by such illuminati as Winston Churchill and other political figures. The interior has an elegant Art-Nouveau feel incorporated into the original early 19h century architecture. It is also located in one of London's few remaining working mews next door to the Hyde Park Stables Angelus is the perfect place to enjoy an atmospheric lunch or dinner or just to sit and enjoy a snack after wandering around the Park only a few minutes away. Situate it is far from the eyes of those who might turn up in shorts and worn back to front peaked caps, this brasserie is a perfect hideaway for those who enjoy good food, good wine and a wonderful atmosphere.

Dancing the Light Fantastic

Angelus is known for its warmth and cuisine par excellence produced by award winning Head Chef Martin Nisbet together with founder Thierry Tomasin a former Chairman Sommelier of Britain. As Thierry told me his contemporary approach to French classics and unbeatable wine cellar make it a mecca for those who love both of these aspects.

From delectable breakfasts, mid morning snacks to lunch or dinner this is a great way to dance the light fantastic when it comes to escaping the outside world and titillating your tastebuds.

My Dinner Experience

The evening I went a very special dish was being prepared..it was roast goose in a pastry shell with wild mushrooms atop Savoy cabbage. I do not think I have ever tasted anything so delicious. Enough for two for sure but I ate the whole bloody dish because I knew I would never have anything like that again. I also ordered a half bottle of incredible Burgundy that was perfectly paired with the goose. Dream I still do of that meal!!!

Expensive yes..over $150 for just me but surely I am worth it and the dinner was sublime.

When next in London treat yourself and dine at Angelus but dont wear cutoffs or peaked caps, you will NOT be allowed in!!!!

The Hyatt Regency Hotel, The Churchill

cnwriterStarred Page
One of the most charming and centrally located hotels in London is the Hyatt Regency, The Churchill. Named after Winston Churchill, this hotel offers superb comfort, fine facilities, restaurants and bars. A great venue to stay at be you on vacation or business.

The Neighbourhood of Portman Square

One of the most charming places to visit in London is the Marylebone area..home toSherlock Holmes on Baker Street and Wigmore Street where famous people through the ages have resided. Not too far away also are the residences where the Pre-Raphealite Brotherhood Burnes-Jones, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais,Dante Gabriel Rossetti and others of that ilk were gathered.

Today you can walk through this amazing neighbourhood and see sights galore enjoy restaurants and buildings that take you back into a more gracious time.

One of my favourite places to stay whenever I visit this marvellous city ]is the Hyatt Regency Hotel, The Churchill. It has held a place of high esteem for many a year and for those lovers of Winston Churchill himself there is a dark and rapturously sublime bar inside the hotel where you can enjoy the best drinks, cigars and conversation.

Service par Excellence

The Hyatt Regency Churchill is conveniently located in the heart of London’s West End with views over the charming gardens of Portman Square ]and within walking distance of Oxford Street. Regent Street and Hyde Park. With its well-appointed guest rooms and suites, a gym and large meeting rooms, business and leisure travellers can be sure that their needs are always catered too.

The hotel has garnered many a review and restaurant award for the fabulous service offered. Seasonal and locally sourced dishes are served in The Montagu and award-winning Italian cuisine at Locanda Locatell a truly superb Italian ristorante. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable as they are hired on their ability to bring service par excellence in all areas of their expertise.

INTERNATIONAL ART FROM THE SAATCHI GALLERY

Known for the art exhibitions they present, recently a number of works were displayed honouring the Olympic Games. Art by Scottish artist Lucy McKenzie.a large-scale painting of gymnast Olga Korbut, South Korean artist Jin Myerson’s painting of a cycling race and Congolese artist Kura Shomali’s homage to Muhammad Ali. Other highlights of this exhibition included Black Grape, a two-metre high wave made out of silicon carbide by British artist Dick Evans and Claire Morgan’s sculpture When You Wish, made out of torn plastic bags and a Malaysian Moon moth, specially commissioned for the exhibition by the hotel.

Marvellous Offerings

Another most tempting exhibition[ was that to celebrate Queen Elizabeth 11 recent Jubilee. The works include the Queen wearing the Diamond Diadem worn by Her Majesty during the procession to her Coronation in 1953 amongst other fabulous pieces.

These are on view in the lounge area of this lovely hotel so do your self a favour, visit, stay and enjoy all the fabulous offerings of this wonderful hotel.
