Salisbury is a lovely little English town with winding street overlooked by ancient wood beamed houses that all meet at a central place. Once the market area where al commerce and social events took place, this area is now filled with charming shops and restaurants. Every Saturday a bustling market is held on the same spot it has been for centuries and you can almost imagine being back in those earlier times. The farmers and many of their customers speak in a soft lilting Wiltshire dialect and a multitude of homemade cheeses and golden butter, crusty loaves of bread, cooked and smoked meats and freshly picked arrays of vegetables and fruit fill the air with delicious aromas.

Amongst all this charm stands the White Hart, an elegant 17th century hotel with its sweeping facade and pillared portico overlooking the famous Salisbury Cathedral. Over the years the White Hart has become known for its wedding receptions and as a special place for celebrations. In the winter huge log fires burn in open fireplaces whilst in the summer months the courtyard is a tapestry of colour with its flower displays. Because of its central location and large complimentary car park, it is an ideal venue for business meetings, private lunches and dinners and has earned the name Heritage Flagship Hotel.

The Squires dining room with its deep crimson walls and damask curtains is a most romantic place to dine. Tables cloaked in pure white linen offset sparkling glass and tableware whilst candles shimmer casting a warm glow around a typically English county dining room. Greatly influenced by French, English and Scottish classic cuisine, the head chef believes that a good working team in the kitchen is most important and he is dedicated in creating a unique style of British food using fresh local produce as well as bringing in delicacies such as superb smoked salmon from Scotland.

Exploring the Countryside around...

Old Sarum

It is a two mile hike from Salisbury to Old Sarum Castle. This massive Iron Age hill fort was used by the Romans, Saxons and Normans before coming one of the most flourishing settlements in medieval England. The dramatic site contains the ruins of a castle where Henry 11 imprisoned his wife, Eleanor of Acquitaine, (they did things like that then!!!!!) It was a very windy wet day when I walked around the high perimeter overlooking a steep hill. The wind was so strong it nearly took me and my umbrella on a flying journey! I decided it might be better to explore the inner part of the keep which was quite fascinating with markers showing where the King's Palace and other buildings once stood.

Nearby attractions are Stonehenge, the Wilton Carpet Factory and Salisbury Race Course.

A very special place to visit is Boxhill. This tall mound set in the heart of Surrey has long been a popular destination because of its fabulous views. Set at the foot of this famous beauty spot is the Burford Bridge Hotel where in days past Lord Nelson spent secret hours with his great love, Emma Hamilton, before setting off to his last battle at Trafalgar. This ancient gem glows with history and the tradition of great hospitality still continues.

So a wonderful journey to this fascinating part of England was my pleasure to be on and now write about.

I say

What an upset it was for me
Not being invited to
My friends wedding party

At first anger did appear
Followed by feelings of utmost pain
A non entity I appeared to be
Not true in my entirety

but seemingly so

Techniques that Work

letting go

Then using techniques I had been taught
Clearing such stuff away from me
Letting go of feelings strong

Where to eat in London can always be difficult especially if you have been brainwashed by media that British food is terrible. But that is a myth and if you read this you will understand more and perhaps gain a little wisdom which you might need....

London has become a mecca for great restaurants...contrary to the myth that has grown up probably due to ignorance and jealousy especially by the French and also by many Americans who mostly have no idea about food...after all they are the ones who created fast food, McDonalds home to chemicalized obese producing stuff and others I do not want to mention.

A few years ago I was invited to lunch with a group of writers in Los Angeles. It was given to honour the Minister of Culture from the UK. After the luncheon he asked each of us to speak a few words and when it came to my turn I told him that my mission was to dispel the myth that had grown up in the USA about British food and since that time I have been doing that.

And So It Goes

Nowadays many of the British chefs are invited all over the world to cook and I for one also find this disturbing as their egos become inflated and they start producing cuisine that is over the top! Unfortunately because of the demand by the public to have exotic dishes many chefs bring in foods that are not seasonal and this is also is to their detriment.

However, we still have hidden away restaurants in London and many towns across the UK where you can find great food being served. Using local products mostly organic and also only seasonal vegetables and fruits, they take pride in the quality of what they serve. I even spoke to one chef who threw away all the micro wave machines in her kitchen because she knew how poisonous micro waved food could be...radio waves with wavelengths ranging from as long as one meter to as short as one millimeter, or equivalently with frequencies that change the food and can harm.

Pleasures of Angelus

So let me tell you about Angelus a fabulous eating house near the Royal Park Hotel just off Westbourne Terrace.Once it was an old pub frequented by such illuminati as Winston Churchill and other political figures. The interior has an elegant Art-Nouveau feel incorporated into the original early 19h century architecture. It is also located in one of London's few remaining working mews next door to the Hyde Park Stables Angelus is the perfect place to enjoy an atmospheric lunch or dinner or just to sit and enjoy a snack after wandering around the Park only a few minutes away. Situate it is far from the eyes of those who might turn up in shorts and worn back to front peaked caps, this brasserie is a perfect hideaway for those who enjoy good food, good wine and a wonderful atmosphere.

Angelus is known for its warmth and cuisine par excellence produced by award winning Head Chef Martin Nisbet together with founder Thierry Tomasin a former Chairman Sommelier of Britain. As Thierry told me his contemporary approach to French classics and unbeatable wine cellar make it a mecca for those who love both of these aspects.

From delectable breakfasts, mid morning snacks to lunch or dinner this is a great way to dance the light fantastic when it comes to escaping the outside world and titillating your tastebuds.

My Dinner Experience

The evening I went a very special dish was being prepared..it was roast goose in a pastry shell with wild mushrooms atop Savoy cabbage. I do not think I have ever tasted anything so delicious. Enough for two for sure but I ate the whole bloody dish because I knew I would never have anything like that again. I also ordered a half bottle of incredible Burgundy that was perfectly paired with the goose. Dream I still do of that meal!!!

Expensive yes..over $150 for just me but surely I am worth it and the dinner was sublime.

When next in London treat yourself and dine at Angelus but dont wear cutoffs or peaked caps, you will NOT be allowed in!!!!

Being a traveller it is important to find hotels where one can enjoy all the comforts whilst away from home. I found the Royal Park quite by chance and will return to stay there again and again....hope you do too...

Offerings of the Royal Park Hotel

The Royal Park Hotel

One of the most enjoyable stays I have experienced in London was at the Royal Park Hotel situate at 3 - 5 Westbourne Terrace. Many years past I had owned a mews flat on the Terrace and was excited to return to this area which has so muchhistorical relevance at least for me.

Luxury Boutique Hotel

The hotel combines three absolutely marvelous Regency townhouses of grey stone that trot merrily side by side down the Terrace. Once private homes in the early 1900’s now they are joined by passageways still retaining the charm of that elegant era. This luxury boutique hotel houses 48 bedrooms each one en suite with lots of detail, limestone bathrooms, four poster beds with silk coverings, artwork, antiques and most important comfort.

The Greeting

The front doors open to a welcoming reception area where you are greeted by an array of smiling faces for the staff at the Royal Park are well versed in the art of welcome and knowledgeable about the area so important for visitors from out of town. Upon arrival welcome drinks are offered and between 7 and 8 pm champagne and canapés are served.

The doorman especially knows his way around and was of great assistance during my stay. I had not realized Paddington Station was so close just as Hyde Park, Regent Park and that great shopping area Oxford Street are within walking distance.

Enjoy

Green Room

The General Manager, Laurent Boutonne, took me on a tour of the hotel; the Blue Room with its cheery fireplace is filled with sofas and comfortable chairs and is open 24 hours for hotel guests only. It is a great place to relax in the evening with candles lit, jazz and blues playing and sipping a glass of wine.

The Green Room where a breakfast buffet heralds the start to a new day also serving as a private dining room, board room and private meetings room. Personalized service is offered and greatly appreciated by many of the business people who frequent the Royal Park.

The Garden

Although it was late Autumn I enjoyed walking around the courtyard behind the hotel with its wood plank benches and tables and where in the summer months events are held. The foliage was turning orange and red but with my vivid imagination I could imagine the green trees and bushes coming alive again as spring returned just as the lounge fire crackled and burned sending out its warmth during the winter months. All this quite makes the Royal Park a hotel for all seasons and reasons.

Be sure to visit, you will be well pleased!
